All Star One

PROCESS FOR DEALING WITH HARMFUL OR POTENTIALLY HARMFUL ACTIONS

As a community we have the responsibility, to ourselves and to others, to provide a safe and welcoming environment for children and adults. However, when any person’s physical and/or emotional well-being is threatened, the source of this threat must be addressed firmly and promptly. Every attempt will be made to resolve such difficult issues by addressing them directly, with compassion and concern, holding confidentiality and respect as a high value, before resorting to additional steps.

All proceedings will be managed in confidence and information shared on a need-to-know basis. A summary of these matters will be communicated to the Executive Committee, and the Secretary of the Exec will be charged with keeping accurate and timely confidential records which reflect the work done to resolve troubling issues. If the issues cannot be resolved, attempts at remediation will proceed to the next stage.

If required by law, the convener of the Executive Committee will immediately report the incident to the proper authorities. The All Star One community will not retaliate against anyone who brings forward a complaint.

Stage One

1. Matters concerning adults shall first be referred to the Conference Troubleshooters and/or the Healing and Reconciliation Committee, who will meet with the person or persons involved to communicate the concern.

2. In matters that relate to the safety and well being of children while on the island, the matter shall be referred to the Children’s Program Coordinators.

3. Conversations will be held in an effort to appropriately resolve the concern.

Stage Two

If a solution has not been reached, the conference leaders (i.e., the troubleshooters, Healing and Reconciliation Committee, Children’s Program Coordinators and/or designated members of the Executive Committee) will consider the following points:

Regarding danger:

Is the individual the source of a threat or perceived threat to persons or property? Are their actions likely to cause harm or injury, or likely to have adverse or unfortunate consequences? Is it harmful or illegal?

Regarding disruption:

What is the level of interference with the smooth operation of the conference that is occurring? Has an event or activity been interrupted by a disturbance or problem?

Regarding offensiveness:

Has the action triggered feelings of deep hurt or upset in another? Has the action been actively aggressive or attacking?

The conference leaders will determine the severity of the situation; talk with the persons involved; and make a recommendation as to the appropriate action to be taken. The Executive Committee will be charged with affirming the recommendation before final action is taken. All involved parties will be informed of the decision.

Stage Three

The conference leaders, after careful consideration, may determine that an individual(s) may not be able to participate in the current or a future conference. This determination may result in a request that the individuals involved in troubling behavior leave the island immediately. In such instances, the management of Star Island will be consulted and informed.
