Chapel
Chapel Flowers
Activity: See to it that flower arrangements are present for Chapel
When: Saturday, Tuesday, Friday
Where: Chapel
Responsibilities: Gather wild grasses, greens, and flowers and make arrangements for the various chapel activities. Make sure to check guidelines at front desk (what can/cannot be picked). Obtain vases from Conference Services and arrange flowers in Chapel. Be sure to check and “freshen” them daily.
Specific Activities:
Off Island:
1. In some years, flowers have been purchased or obtained in a committee member’s garden and brought to the Island. In 2006, Susan Bram consulted Howard Lightfoot’s CD on flowers of Star Island.
2. A special arrangement is sometimes constructed for Sunday.
On Island:
1. Ask Conference Services which flowers to pick, and find out where the vases are kept. Be sure to use fresh water in the vases.
2. After the first arrangement is completed on Saturday, it will be necessary to refresh, or even redo the flowers during the week.
Follow up Responsibilities: None
People Needed: 1 or 2.
Materials: Flowers and other plant material; clippers; vases, gloves. NOTE: Vases are stored with salt and pepper in the dinning room.
Total cost: None
Comments: Any questions about flowers to pick on the Island, check with Conference Services. See instructions below. Very well organized by Pels. Makes the task a pleasure.
[Key to cabinet in Parker, where special Chapel vases are kept, is in the left hand drawer of the big desk by the phone closet. There is also a pair of pruning shears and scissors there. The cabinet in Parker is to the right as you enter the door. There is water on the side of the wood shed behind Newton Centre for filling the flower vases.
[Use wild flowers. Do not pick cultivated flowers from gardens near buildings. No iris or lilies. Roses may be picked, especially near the paths where they are crowding. Bayberry greens may be picked for fill, they are very fragrant.] – Conf.Svs. 6/92

Evening Chapel
Activity: Hold chapel each evening at about 10:00 pm.
Responsibilities: Recruit 4 individuals or families to lead and organize chapel service.
Specific Activities:
Off Island:
1. Obtain list of conferees accepted for All Star I from Chairs by June 1.
2. Review previous year’s list of people who expressed interest in conducting chapel.
3. Contact those you choose. Be certain that they know they are responsible for the music also.
4. When four have accepted, give Chairs the list of leaders and when they are scheduled.
On Island:
5. Pelicans responsible for lanterns will see to it that lanterns are on hooks along path. Someone should be at steps with flashlight to help people enter chapel.
6. Recruit someone to ring chapel bell at beginning of each service (should be rung slowly). Also need a porch organizer, and a flashlight holder for chapel entrance. Be sure that the Pelicans will be ready with the lanterns on the porch.
7. Talk to each leader of chapel to see if any help is needed.
8. At 10 pm coordinate with the chapel leaders the start of people leaving the porch.
9. The chapel leader schedule normally is as follows: Saturday through Wednesday – choice of evening chapel organizer, with one evening reserved for present Chairs; Thursday-Senior teens; Friday-New Chairs.
10. After chapel is over be certain that the steps and particularly hazardous areas on the path have someone present to help.
11. Plan what you would do if a violent rainstorm occurs when chapel is scheduled to start. One option is to hold the service in Elliot.
Follow up Responsibilities: Thank leaders and other volunteers
People Needed Each Evening: Chapel Leaders, Chapel bell ringer, porch organizer, pelican
candle lighters, flashlight holder at chapel entrance.
Materials: 4 flashlights
Total Cost: None
Comments: Try to select people who did not lead a chapel service in the previous year. It is not necessary for the organizer to lead a service.
2002 – If present Chairs do not do chapel on Sat night, select a chapel leader who represents the AS I community & can set a ‘tone’ for the week (2001: Prochaskas, 2002: Henry&Dana Powsner) 2003 – comment: Some people need to realize more the importance of the chapel service re the appropriate music and preparation. Suggested possibilities for this activity: Anne and Scott Stewart, Gabrielle and Jason Prochaska, Jenny Easter & Derrick Nelson, Shelley Powser & Steve Skrovan.
Past participants:1994- Roy Cook. 1995-Jan&Jim Prochaska. 1996-Debbie Ninos & John Bennett. 1997-Jan&Jim Prochaska and Bobby&Bob Jorgensen (Candlelight Coord.) 1998 – John & Estelle Best. 1999 – Bill Clegg. 2000-2002 – Ben & Debbie Weiner Soule. 2003 – Jim & Jan Prochaska 2004—Ned and Kathy Tillman 2005, 2006-John & Estelle Best

Morning Chapel
Family Chapel
Children’s Chapel
Activity: Hold chapel at 9:00 to 9:20 am Monday through Friday in the Chapel
Responsibilities: Recruit speakers, develop schedule, see to it that morning chapels run smoothly, and are family-oriented, worshipful activities.
Specific Activities:
Off Island:
1. Obtain conferee list from Chairs and recruit five leaders
2. Develop a schedule and theme for the week, if you want.
On Island:
3. Contact each speaker and find out if there will be any special needs for their services
4. Ask chapel leaders if member of their group would like to be the bell ringer; if not, recruit someone. Start ringing chapel bell (slowly) 1-2 min. before 9:00 and continue until 4-5 min. after 9:00 or until people have stopped coming up the hill. Then signal the leader to begin.
5. Give information to person in charge of daily activities greenboard
6. Be certain that speakers are present and are ready to go a few minutes before 9:00
7. Decide if you want an ‘end of service’ song (i.e., ‘Go Well and Safely,’ ‘As We Leave This Friendly Place,’ etc.). Make sure you have people to help lead the song.
8. Be present at each service and help make things run smoothly
Follow up Responsibilities: Clean up chapel
People Needed: One or two
Materials: CD player for music
Total Cost:
Comments: The list of conferees and phone numbers should be made available to the organizers of this activity as soon as possible. 2003 – It was very helpful to receive from the chairs a list of people who had expressed an interest in participating in this activity. They were able to contact these people via e-mail, and establish the schedule before arrival on the island. This should be done every year, if possible. New coordinators might want to think about having a Children’s Dedication service. Conferees could be emailed ahead of time to see if there’s interest; if no one responds a different service could be planned. Charlie Close performed one in 2006 in which four families participated.
